I am in Library West at UF and Gustavo Rivera (a tutor at the downtown Sante Fe Blount Tutoring Lab and that works for the Academic Foundation) showed me a sheet with info about this program. He told me that you are looking for teachers for this program, and I am very interested because I'm a born teacher at heart!

Here are the classes I'd love to teach/help teach and why:::

Astronomy: I got an A in Introduction to Stars & Galaxies when I took it 3 years ago here at UF, and I love the subject material.

Biology Bliss: I got an A in AP Biology back in 2000 as a freshman in High School. Biology is easy and fun!

Book Club: I am an avid reader and I can talk about books all day!

Creative Writing: I have attached a short story of mine, "Glass Traps Open & Close." I love love love to write.

Drums, Drums, Drums: I can drum for hours!

Garage Band Music: I have made my own music using Intua Beatmaker for iPhone (attached v4 preview.wav) using loops, samples, my voice, and rhythms, and I can play the keyboard, so I'd love to help out here. Karma Kidz: I've done yoga on several occations, and although I don't know much by heart (I remember downward dog!) I know I've got the flexibility and form to be of help here.

Logic & Debate: I did Policy Debate and Lincoln Douglas debate in high school. I was the Most Valuable Varsity Debator at Lake Brantley High School under Rob Carraway, and I love, love, love debate! I taught younger kids how to *think* in terms of value debate and I know I can be of great help here.

Maniacle Math: I tutored pre-calculus, I went up to Linear Algebra here at UF, my algebra skills are stellar, I can teach math like nobody's business! Helping kids understand the logic of math is all about good examples, in my own humble opinion, and that means imagination! I can no doubt help out a ton here.

Modern Dance: I'm a dancer with the local Gainesville band Oh, Fortuna. I love to dance and make up movements to match music. Here's a video of us performing... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azHO-_I7_ug

Pencil Drawing: I've been drawing since childhood. I especially loved The Draw Squad! (with Mark Kissler) a television program that taught kids how to draw in 3D. I have been recently going through a book he put out and redrawing all the examples in it. I love to draw in pencil and I'd love to help out here.

Philosophy 101: "How do you know who your friends are? Can computers think? Can you think about nothing at all?" I'd love to hear the kinds of things kids would have to say on these subjects, and I'm confident that I could help regulate a discussion among kids so that every idea is heard and answers are allowed to develop.

Photoshop Fun: Here's the one I'm most interested in. I've been teaching myself Photoshop for the past 2 years by taking leaves off the ground, scanning them, and then turning them into digital art. Photoshop is the most fun I can have! I've attached some of my better works, but I actually have hundreds (fon.picturepush.com). I would love love love LOVE to teach Photoshop Fun because fun is exactly what photoshop is all about to me!

Piano: I learned, as a child, to read music. I've forgotten that (but I can learn again quickly) but I've never forgotten how to play the Can-Can, and a handful of other songs. With a little brushing up, I'd be up to snuff to help out here.

Sculpture: This is just pure fun and imagination with a dash of technique and procedure. I can help the kids do clay, paster of paris, and papier mache all day!

Sensational Science: I was largly science minded all through high school and at UF. I majored in physics, then nuclear engineering, and then computer engineering. I think scientifically and can gently help kids slow down and state a hypothisis and ask them the right questions to help them find a way they'd like to test it. This would be a blast.

Shutter Bug: I do digital photography, not film, but I've got 100 photo albums on my facebook, and I've been an avid photographer for the past 4 years. I'm glad to read that "students will be allowed the freedom of artistic expression through the lens." I've attached one of my fav photos that I took this year "DSC02984 Rubber Bend."

Soccer: I played club soccer for years as a kid and some in high school and college with friends. I love to play; I've got all the basic skills, and above all: I know when to pass!

Spanish in the USA: I went up to Spanish 3 in high school, took one class at UF, and went to Santigo, Chile for a week in 2006. I'd need to brush up, but I know I could handle a beginner's class in spanish... and my accent is quite good. I've got the pronounciation down.

Theater for Everyone: I love to act and sing. I've acted in a handful of my friend's videos, so I know I'd enjoy helping out here.

Wild Ones: I love animals and I'm always eco-minded. I could certainly help the more timid ones face the animals and help maintain an atmosphere of respect for nature, the animals, and our environment.

Pistawn Valdez didn't want to live anymore, and he knew how he wanted to go. He took in a shuttering breath. A sheet of fear flash flooded out to his fingers and toes, but he smirked darkly at the anxiety, scoffing aloud into the low thunder of the aircraft's twin prop engines.

A sphinx-like mask of concentration affixed his face. He'd trained weekends for a month to get this: his first solo skydive. He'd dreamt of it but was each time surprised awake being possessed by an alien need to weep, as if the crying was enformed as a wisp of cloud he'd fallen through.

And indeed he'd fallen through. There was a glass trap door in his rock bottom.

"The depths I reach are limitless," the words ran through his head, some fragment of memory unattached. Not this time. He saw himself lying on a page, each phrase more repulsively uninteresting than the last. The jump instructor was yelling over the roar of the open door. Two others had already jumped. He slammed shut the book on himself. He eyed the instructor, pointed to the ripcord, to the backup, then gave a thumbs up. The instructor, gripping ahold the lip over the door, peered out, estimating, then turned to Pistawn and hollered, 'GO!'

No hesitation; out he went. His every muscle relaxed. He felt soft and sure, hypnolulled on the massage of the air over his heavy jumpsuit. His eyes hung half-open behind goggles.

Pistawn gazed on as his body fell like a bomb out of the blue, a particle flying across the universe. Pistawn watched the particle hit the surface, unaffected, and pass through the Earth, through gorgeous caverns, through bodies buried eons ago, through peat and raw metals, through oils and gases, through plutonium and elements unknown, through the core and out the other side past a Chinese tree with a child in it who'd climbed just to see the view.

Off into space went the particle, went Pistawn, out of the Solar system, missing every other planet and moon by a longshot.

Out sailed Pistawn for hours upon hours, years upon years, a trillion years collapsing under the weight of a trillion other trillion of years. All the glorious, mysterious figments of deep space, the star clusters, nebulae, orbital rosettes, pulsars, quasars, and perhaps habitable planets were all far too far for Pistawn to see.

How far, how long had Pistawn drifted before he'd passed through Earth? How long had it been since? Was the Earth long dead, eaten by the sun?

Pistawn is the last man left. The only one who knows what it was like to say the Pledge of Allegience and believe it, to float on an innertube down a river running through a forest, the only one left who could describe how ridiculous it feels to see a giraffe for the first time, or the relief of waking from a nightmare where your life is ruined.

There, hanging before him, is a small star, a white dwarf circling madly sending in a stream of gas spiraling into dim static: Hawking Radiation, a black hole, the only real Great Equalizer, the House of Chaos. In you go and all is lost, and Pistawn was going in like a kid at the top of a tall, tall slide with his mind suddenly not made up.

A pair of hands, the kid behind him's, lay upon his back and like a bear trap snapping Pistawn knows that hole is not where he wants to go. His every muscle spasms just once in futile refusal, but physics is physics, and, tragedy or not, Pistawn is up Event Horizon Creek without a means of propulsion. In slow motion his legs stretch out under him like he's infinity tall. Pistawn looks straight up, the way he came, and sees the white dwarf whiz by like the biggest, luckiest shooting star.

Pistawn breathes and sees the Earth straight ahead, details blooming before his eyes as he rushes down: canyons and cliffs, mesas and snaking streams, shadows of clouds and shadows of birds. Another fragment of unattached memory runs through his head, "I think you're damn lucky to be alive, kiddo. You could be floating out there forever." He smirks and says into the wind, "Boy, am I glad I ran into you," and pulls the ripcord.

Sports are only good for exercise (when you're doing them) and entertainment (when you're watching), but is there a case to be made for letting real emotion come into play?

Think of the riots in South American over futbol and the celebration of "our" victory during the National Championships. Each team is made up of individuals who are all strangers to you. You could easily be friends with any of them in the future. What is the bias good for?

I think the anger sports fans can have (and jubilance) is akin to letting yourself be scared by a slasher like Scream. But nobody calls 911 when Drew Barimore gets stabbed, so no one should really care when their favorite team gets beaten.

The teams can care about wins and losses, because they invest their time heavily. But what do sports fans have invested in their teams? Only time spent rooting fruitlessly at TV screens. All that really matters is that you had fun with your friends watching the game.

It's like me saying, "I'll be really, genuinely bummed if you flip that coin and it's tails."

Don't clap when your team scores; don't jeer the opposing team. Give it up. They're just selling you Coke, Hotdogs, Junk with Logos, and foam hands

how i feel after those two finals

i feel like i did really bad on them both. I started studying earlier than usual, a bit more than a week ahead of time, but it wasn't enough. both nights before I considered staying up and studying but just went to bed instead. right at the very end of the Data Structures & Algorithms final i realized that i had not read the last sentence of one of the questions and started to understand it and then BOOM times up and I didn't push it and try to scribble while the professors and TA's looked on, waiting. one kid did that, and he got that question right. I feel like i'm not learning from my mistakes, or if i am it's not enough what changes I've made. Yes I started studying earlier, but the time I spent studying was just me feeling more and more confused about the material.

I wish I went to more office hours, I wish I spent more time with the CISE tutors, I wish I went back over my homeworks and quizzes more thoroughly, I wish I played with the code in my own time and made something fun out of what they were teaching me so I really remembered it and cared.

when the free time comes I read books, read the internet, draw, make leaf pictures, go to my friend's houses, hike, and do every other fun, valuable thing under the sun other than study. I admit it: I can't study. I'm not saying I'm incabable of aquiring the ability to study, but I currently can't do it. That's how I act and that's how I am. I just. can't. do it. but i've done it before: that night before the Differential Equations quiz I got out of bed at 11pm and went to the empty common room in North Hall and buckled down and figured out what Professor Crew had been talking about for the last couple weeks and I passed the exam. And I did it again, studying at the Library. But then when the next exam came around I just didn't get it together and went and bombed it. But then I got it together and finally figured out how to do it for the final, but I still couldn't get better than a C+.
I don't care anymore. Before I cared, and now I just wish I cared. In elementary school I paid super-close attention to every single thing and I wanted straight A's and I got them. When I was in gifted in middle school I got a handful of B's and felt bad but it was okay, they were gifted classes anyhow. In high school I got only one C, in spanish, but that teacher gave even native speakers B's, and I learned more than the kids with A's from different teachers. In college, Diff Eq was my first C but not my last. When I started to bomb I withdrew, and now I'm just bombing.

If I can't care about studying then what do I care about? I'm confused now. I'm confused about what's important to me because I'm confused about how I think of myself. In elementary school I thought of myself as the kid who knows more than all the other kids and they all envy me. In middle school and high school I was the smart, funny, fun kid. In college I think of myself as the kid who impresses people by how "out of himself" he is, and who scoffs at my former arrogance. But now I mourn the loss of my super-smart self-status and I don't know who I am now and who I aspire to be. I am who I aspire to be.

What do I aspired to?
I aspire to be as conscious as I can be, and to help others be more conscious, too. Conscious of beauty in the world and of how we don't need to feel bad about ourselves.
how wonderful are the people around me! what precious vessels of thought and experience! each one has been touched uniquely by their lives, and I aspire to cheer them up when they're down and help them see what keys release them from intellectual pain. I aspire to be a key finder, to be a loyal, heart felt friend. Some say you can give infinitely because god fills us up. That the more we give of ourselves, the more we're given, because god wants us to be giving. It gives to the people around me through me, and the more I give the more he let's me have to give. And when I really have given someone something they value, they give back. Why do I set myself up for failure? Do I? I sign up for classes where my passion used to lie, but now it's gone. What does it matter the grade I'm given? I aspire to be one who only values the grade I give myself. and I didn't study more because I didn't want to know more. but come test time I remember how I want to feel, writing those right answers. I want that feeling I got before, that I aced it, whizzed it, pwned it, made my teacher smile and be pleased and proud. But these professors are little more that strangers. Was that good feeling of acing a test just pride? just self satisfaction like, "yeah, i'm smart, i rule"? I aspire to not want that. I aspire to simply rule without caring about ruling. Why did I come here? No one around me encouraged me any other way.
I wish I had a personal tutor who really wanted me to understand what they knew. I'm a mentor-person. I want someone to care about my understanding, and I want to please that person. but now i'm grown, and i'm so confused. i want to be happy but what's going to make me happy? i think: loving people, loving my friends, loving those who love me, and loving those who maybe one day will be important to me. you never know who you're going to end up loving, so treat strangers with kindness, with gentle tenderness. what am i saying. i don't know.

what am i trying to get out of life? passionate acheivement. when you really want to do it and you're doing it and you've done it--AWESOME!
so when i flunk a test it's like i sort of want to do it, i'm not really doing it, and i didn't do it--BOO. and it's not just the end that matters, it was all along. that was the good part, the whole thing. I told myself before, i'm not signing up for a class that i'm not really interested in. but now I don't know what classes I would be passionate about. probably creative photography. or calculator game programming.
i don't want to be a self-centered person who only cares about itself. I aspire to care about everyone else around me more than myself, and to let those people I care about notice my own needs and help me.
what will I do this summer? work at survey lab? take Digital Logic? do fine arts modeling? do that art show? good stuff? i don't know. digital logic will suck. i don't care about those circuits. i don't care about those surveys. i DO care about those figure drawings, and i DO care about that art show. I should call that lady and find out more about it...
